I thought that as we are now two thirds of the way through this assessment task I should post up a review of what I have learnt and what I have found useful so far.
Having not had much experience with Web 2.0 platforms other than Facebook, I have found it a really interesting task to look into the other platforms such as Twitter and Feedly and have a go and being more than a passive user of sites such as Wikipedia and Trove. It has been good to really explore these platforms as well as interacting with other people.
The thing I have found to be most useful has been Feedly. I have been using it almost daily, to check news blogs, library blogs and baking blogs. It is so convenient to have them all in one place, and only having to check one website to see whether these sites have been updated or not. I have found it really convenient to use, and make different groups and save pages to look back on later. I also have the app on my phone so I can check while I am on the train or away from my computer.
I can't say I have taken to Twitter. Although I have looked at news organisations and companies feeds to get check something, I am still not using it as my major source of information. And I don't like how some companies, especially news sites, have multiple tweets for the same item (because of the word limit) so I find that it is just easier to go to their actual website and read the article. I still am not in the habit of tweeting myself, but maybe if more of my friends began using twitter I would use it more as well.
One major issues I have with Twitter is when I want to link an article from a website that I find interesting, it often asks for my permission to be able to follow others and tweet for me. This has put me off posting tweets that I think are interesting on my feed. Instead I copy and past the link if I find it interesting enough, but that is an extra step I would rather not have to do.
I have attempted to transcribe more graves on Billion Graves but I don't think I will get up to 500. I have also not got around to doing more Wikipedia entries, but I have made come corrections on a few Trove pages (like this one) when I was looking for some information on a relative. Unfortunately I am number 18,878 in the Hall'O Fame Ranking!
This last week, I have also tried to use Delicious, but I can't say I enamoured with it. It seems like it could be good for communicating with other professionals or working on group projects. However having a Feedly account and a Zotero account gives me similar tools, but I can separate my study from the sites I look at privately. I also don't have any friends in my network yet (sadface)- so add me if you can. My user name is alwright.
All in all, the last four weeks have been a good excuse to sit down and have a go at a lot of different platforms and really begin to use sites in new ways.
Hey Annie, the review is a great idea. I've found looking at all these different social media quite interesting, but there always seems to be a number of privacy concerns. i'm never sure if i should let it worry me or not..
