Most of the blogs that we were directed to were incredibly interesting, giving an insight in to the work that librarians do, demonstrating once again that Google can't answer every question and that there is much more to being a librarian than checking out books. Many of these blogs also highlight how useful Web 2.0, in the form of blogs, can be for a profession which is has worldwide membership, and one which is constantly developing with new technology.
I then went to look at Annoyed Librarian Blog. It's a blog dedicated to giving a voice to the things that annoy librarians- hence the title.
I stumbled across an entry entitled "Librarians and Dating" which discussed an article from the Daily Mail (always a good start!) about a study which looked at what professions heterosexual people were likely to want to date. Men apparently want to date lawyers and women men in advertising. Here is the article.
The study found that male librarians were least likely to strike up a conversation with women teachers, but that male librarians were also the least picky. Women librarians are apparently the the pickiest when it comes to dating (probably why I'm single!).
The Annoyed Librarian and I came to a similar conclusion about why women librarians would be picky. As they wrote: "When you're a female librarian, men usually want you to let down your hair, take off your glasses, and sultrily gaze in their direction until they speak ungrammatically and totally ruin the moment. You have to be wary of that kind of thing." Maybe because I wear glasses, and am still telling a lot of people that I am heading in the direction of becoming a librarian, eliciting a few of comments about along this line, it stuck out to me that although librarians are heading further and further away from the stereotype, it is still there.
E Harmony has a list of reasons to date a librarian, which includes thing like: they are literate, well educated, organised, and punctual. It also, I am happy to say says "Ignore stereotypes. They don't really apply anymore," but no 9. is "Some people have a "thing" for librarians. If that's you, date one." I'm not entirely sure I would date anyone who says to me- "I have a thing for librarians," (see paragraph above!).
One thing the list does get wrong, at least in my case is that "Librarians are great Scrabble opponents. ("Great" means "undefeated")" -but I'm hopeless at it.
Here's the rest of the list.
Hi Annie, your entry about sultry looks gave me a giggle - in the library - but fortunately in a non-quiet study area. I'm not so hot at scrabble either. My partner though, who is in IT, plays Words With Friends and is a demon. Does that count? I think I am a grammar Nazi though. I must look at the Annoyed Librarian blog!
ReplyDeleteLove this! Totally explains why everyone in my family thinks I'm so fussy...
